Open Letter to Josh Broomberg

The attached picture of Jewish South African high school students has outraged me and many others.   One student, Josh Broomberg, has issued a statement in defense of his actions.  Below is his statement, which is followed by my open letter to him in response to these events:

For those of you reading this, my name is Josh Broomberg. I am the currently the Deputy Head Boy of King David Victory Park and the Captain of the SA National Debating Team.

What follows is my statement regarding the recent controversy over my stand against the human rights abuses currently being perpetrated against the citizens of Gaza.

Firstly, I would like to apologise. It was not intended to create the uproar it has, it was not designed to offend or upset. Because this has occurred, I apologise. But what I will say is this:

I am proud to be a South African Jew, and I am proud to attend a Jewish Day School. I am also a Zionist. I believe in Israel’s right to exist, and her right to defend herself from the threat presented by those seeking to hurt her citizens. All citizens of Israel, the West Bank and Gaza have the absolute right to live in peace and security.

It was with this in mind that I, and my team, chose to take the stand we did. It was not about politics, or about states. It was about humanity. We stand with the thousands of civilians who have lost their lives in the conflict. We stand with a people who do not yet have a state to protect themselves. We stand with the innocents. We stand for two states. We do not stand against Israel. All of this applies to me personally as well.

While I apologise for the hurt we seem to have caused, I do not apologise for standing with Palestine on this issue. This is not because I do not believe in Israel or its people. I do believe in Israel, and I take this stand because I can love and suppoprt the state of Israel but still reject and criticize some of its actions. In fact, I consider it my duty to contribute to the growing worldwide discussion surrounding the desperate need for a quick end and lasting solution to this pernicious conflict.

In my eyes, this criticism is not a betrayal, but actually the only honest and true way to show my patriotism and commitment to Israel, as well as my belief in human rights and the entitlement of all citizens of all countries to those right. To improve, we must criticise.

I will note, explicitly, that our support and sympathy also lies with the innocent Israelis exposed to threat at the hands of terrorists. The conflict is a tragedy for all, and once again, all innocent life is equally valuable.

We took a stand for the thousands and for those without a voice but we do not for a second condone any violence what so ever. We stand for peace.

Most importantly, the issues are complex but we can never let go of the ability to talk and engage with the other side. if we lose this ability we lose our claim to be an enlightened community. We lose what it means to be human.

I am proud to bear the responsibility of continuing the discussion.

Josh Broomberg

Open letter to Josh Broomberg from Anthony Reich

Dear Josh,

I have been following the unfortunate events surrounding your appearance in public with a Palestinian scarf around your neck.  I have also read your statement following these events.  In my view, your statement serves to confuse your position rather than clarify it.  You have managed to get yourself into a very unfortunate set of circumstances.

How can you honestly state that you did not intend to create an uproar or to offend or upset?  How can you say that “it was not about politics, or about states”?  Your apology, based as it is on this absurd statement, is extremely difficult to accept.  What did you think could be interpreted from a boy posing as a representative of KDVP, with a Palestinian scarf draped around his neck?  If you are sincere about standing with humanity, you have numerous other ways to do so.  By choosing this particular “humanitarian” gesture, you are clearly making a statement which is highly charged and highly political.  Perhaps it would be more honest for you to acknowledge that taking a political stand of this nature was a big mistake on your part.

As a former South African living in Israel for the past 16 years, I believe that there are a few important points that you may wish to consider about the conflict between Israel and the Arabs who now call themselves Palestinians.   It may surprise you to learn that most Israelis have a great deal of sympathy for the innocent Palestinian civilians, who are probably the greatest victims of this conflict.  Despite this fact, you will not find them parading with Palestinian scarves around their necks.  Doing so demonstrates support for the political cause and for the Palestinian leadership, rather than for the humanitarian difficulties experienced by innocent civilians.  Support for the politicians and their cause is the position that you are clearly taking by your actions.  We pity the Palestinians because of the way in which their own leadership treats them.  Whereas the Israeli civilians under fire have a government and an army that make every effort to protect them wherever possible, the Palestinians do not.  Not only does their leadership not take any action to protect them at all,  their leadership actually uses them against Israel.  This is because they know that Israelis care more about the Palestinian children than they do.  They know that Israeli pilots will rather not release a bomb from their plane if they know that it risks injuring innocent people.  The fact that this decision could cost Israeli lives in the future due to the rocket launch site being used again to launch further missiles, does not enter into their immediate consideration.  Where is your protest against the lack of humanity shown by the Palestinian leaders against their own people?  Where is your acknowledgement of the IDF field hospital that has been set up on the Gaza border to treat Palestinians injured in the conflict?  Where is your protest against the fact that their leaders are preventing them from taking advantage of this treatment, but also not offering alternative methods of treatment?

Although we have infinite sympathy for the innocent civilians, we do not feel the same for their leadership.  These are individuals who feel no qualms about allowing their own children to be strapped with explosives in the name of being martyred.  If this is how they treat their own children, how can we expect them to respond to ours?  Whereas they rejoice in the fact that their children have been martyred for the cause, we grieve for each and every Jewish life lost.  Whereas they spend all their foreign aid on building an infrastructure to attack and destroy Israel, even if this means that their children go hungry, we spend our money on building bomb shelters and developing the Iron Dome so that our children will be safe and sound.  Whereas we think twice and three times before taking action that could hurt their innocent civilians, they throw their children in the path of our bombs to gain world sympathy and PR advantage.  And they fire their missiles aimlessly into the centres of Israel’s most densely populated civilian areas.  These are facts that have been proven on more than one occasion.  Whereas we are prepared to take a risk in order to allow them the opportunity to prove that they are sincere about the “two states for two peoples” concept, they use every opportunity to destroy us so that they can have all the land, Jew-free, for themselves.

Please do not be fooled into believing that this is about the “occupation”.  This is about the future existence of a Jewish homeland.  The words in the charter of the PLO and in the Hamas charter, stating that their objective is to completely destroy the State of Israel seem blatant enough.  If they are not, the events in Gaza over the past 9 years should be clear enough for those who are interested to listen.  We all know that the Palestinians only arose and claimed the West Bank and Gaza as a Palestinian homeland after Israel captured these territories in the Six Day War of 1967.  Until Israel had possession of this land, there was never a reason for them to lay claim to it.  When the Israeli government turned Gaza over to them on a silver platter in 2005, we all hoped that times had changed and that they would use the opportunity to build on the two states for two peoples.  Instead of grabbing the chance to really build a state and a future for their people, they have spent millions of dollars and 9 years to build an infrastructure that is designed to attack and destroy Israel.

In wars and conflicts, you cannot support both sides.  You cannot bat for both teams.  At best, you can be a disinterested, objective bystander that takes neither one side nor the other.  More likely, you will take the side of one of the parties in the conflict.  When taking a stand, you are by definition in opposition to the second party to the conflict.  Despite your nice words about believing in Israel’s right to exist and her right to defend herself, you chose to don a Palestinian scarf at a time of war in Gaza.  You cannot sympathise with Israel, and appear with a Palestinian scarf around your neck at the same time.  Your actions speak much louder than your words.  When it came to making a public statement, you chose the Palestinians at the expense of Israel.  Why do you feel that it is acceptable to say that your “sympathy also lies with innocent Israelis exposed to threat at the hands of terrorists”?  Why does your sympathy not lie primarily with innocent Israelis, who have taken the risk time after time to search for the elusive path to peace in our land?  After all, these are your people.  These are the people who will look after you in the event that you may, G-d forbid, find yourself in serious trouble.  When you turn up at Ben-Gurion airport with your parents’ ketuba in your hand asking for citizenship of the Jewish homeland, they will not remember that you appeared in public with a Palestinian scarf.  You will be welcomed home to your ancestral homeland like all other Jews.  The Palestinians, for whom you stood up so brazenly in public, will also conveniently forget your scarf when they are searching for Jews to annihilate in the search for their version of the “final solution”.  Remember that, like you, the vast majority of Israelis seek peace and not war.  Unfortunately, this is a war that we are forced to fight, rather than doing so by choice.  Even when forced into something against our will, our new type of Jew does not shy away from this challenge.  We are brave and willing to do all that is needed to protect ourselves.  We are determined to succeed.  Your actions insult thousands of young men and women of the IDF (including my own sons) who go out of their way to fight a war in the most humane and humanitarian way possible, and whose actions give you the freedom to be a Jew representing your country in debating competitions in safety around the world.

You are most fortunate to have been born into a world that has a Jewish homeland.  I feel sure that your grandparents and great-grandparents would have wished to do all that they can to make you understand what it was like to live in world without one.  This privilege that you have, is also the one that allows you to live in relative safety and security as a Jew in your bubble in Victory Park.  It allows you to have a comfortable life in the knowledge that you have somewhere to fall back to in the event of any emergency.  Beware of taking this for granted.  Anti-Semitism is ever prevalent around the world.  The only force that prevents anti-Semites from destroying the Jews as they tried to do during the Shoah, is the State of Israel.  My recommendation to you is to appreciate, value and protect this huge asset.  Be grateful to those who are prepared to risk and to give their lives in the interests of ensuring that our Jewish homeland continues to exist, and continues to strengthen.  Do not be misled and misguided by those in the international press who confuse you into protecting our enemies at the expense of our Jewish state.  Her actions are not always perfect, and there is a great deal that you can criticise.  But nobody is perfect and no country is perfect.  If you search for faults, you will surely find them.  But be grateful and proud for the wonderful things that have been achieved, and for the way in which Israel gives all Jews around the world the backing to live as proud Jews wherever they are.  Israel will always protect you, and will give you much to be proud about.

Try to envisage for a moment what would happen if Israel unilaterally laid down its arms today, and refused to fire another bullet or missile.  Now try to envisage what would happen if the Palestinians did the same thing.  Which situation do you think is most likely to lead to peaceful coexistence between the parties?

I cannot hide the shame and anger that I felt in seeing you grab your five minutes of fame with that scarf around your neck.  You have shamed yourself, your family, your school and your community in my eyes, and in the eyes of many others.  You have misused your position in an unforgivable way.  I hope that, one day, you will have the huge honour to experience life as Jew in Israel, and will be able to understand the error of your ways.  Only when living here can you really understand the significance of what you have done.  I never wish you to lose your sympathy and support for the weak.  This is a characteristic that Jews have, and should be proud of.  But this should not be confused with the insult that you have dished out to Israel and her people by your actions at this time.  Shame on you.

Regards
Anthony Reich

In Rockville, MD there was a solidarity evening that was addressed by Major General Yaakov Ayish. He said that the reason that the Palestinians sent rockets to Israel is only partially as a response to the kidnapping of the 3 boys and the kidnapping of the boy from East Jerusalem. The main reason is because the Palestinians feel isolated. Their only allies are Qatar and Turkey. They had allies in Syria until they decided to not support Assad and lost that connection. In order to gain sympathy they started shelling Israel. Then Israel retaliates and everyone says poor Palestinians including Josh Broomberg.
I object to the statements made by Josh. It is very easy to sit in South Africa when boys your age are putting their lives on the line so that you can keep the skin on your backside. You are very well aware of the rising antisemitism in South Africa stoked by the pro Muslim government. The only reason that there have been no pogroms in South Africa or France is because of the existence of the state of Israel. Let's see Josh on the border of Israel with my son before he makes lofty speeches.
There are millions of people in the world in need of humanitarian aid. Your efforts should be directed to the people of Sudan, Syria and Iraq rather than the Palestinians who are getting handouts from Qatar.

Well written Anthony Reich.
Shame on you Joshua.
You need to grow up and get educated before you get to insult me as a Jew with that scarf around your neck. Disgusting behavior.

Shame on you Joshua. When you grow up you will discover the error of your ways.

Perhaps joshy et al should debate with hamas leadership over their charter of 'from the jordan to the sea' slaughter of jews. Maybe with his brilliant insight & vision he can dissuade them from their mission.

Well written Anthony Reich. I have been outraged since the first time I saw this picture.NOrmally I would not comment, but I cannot hold my thoughts any more. I went to KDVP and it was a Zionist school with a strong Jewish identity. What has happened to KDVP? No comment or action from the school? What message does that send out to the students? Josh, your only action now would be to step down from your position, which I feel you have abused and embarrassed. This is not a time for debate, it is a time to be a mentch and apologize to the whole Jewish community (worldwide I might add.) Your apology letter is just digging a bigger hole for yourself. Today I live in Israel and my daughter is in a fighting unit in the IDF. It is a privilege to live here and to serve. I wonder what your plans are for next year? A car from your parents, a fun gap year? Maybe you should be considering volunteering for the IDF to help you grow up a bit. Shame on you.

Very well written but when will people accept that 17 year old children have no appreciation of consequences no matter how bright they are or what position they hold. That is why political activism is so rife amongst students because at that stage of life one is egocentric, opinionated, "brave", with little understanding of the broader picture. I remember my own actions at that age and even though I still hold very strong beliefs I handle myself differently today. I am concerned that if the vitriolic messages against this young man continue (yours is not) then somebody will harm him which none of us want.

Josh. Anthony has replied to you like a father would his son. When KDVP entrusted you to lead they, I am sure, did not expect you to abuse the power given to you.
You have raised a cloud over KDVP, you have raised a heavy cloud over your Jewish Community who trusted you.
Josh, we ask you and your cohorts to spend time examining what you have done to yourself and to us as a proud Jewish Nation. Be man enough to correctly withdraw your remarks so that once again you can stand tall.

My issue is not with the sentiments expressed by the letter but with the fact that we have forgotten that children form outside Israel and who have not lived in the shadow of war, do not have the maturity of thought that we expect from them. If we disagree with what Josh did, the forum for correction and discipline is the parental home and the school not the excessive berating of strangers that could create massive personal problems for Josh.

He will need careful discussion with parents and teachers to realise his folly and come to terms with the appropriate remedies. Stop this public outcry - we are not being smart by vilifying him at this age.

Stop bullying the kid. He is entitled to an opinion.

I think Im more ashamed about the calling for this kids head, than for his stupidly thought out actions. If he wore a Magen David and a Palestinian scarf would that have been justification or as Jews are we not able to think critically and determine our opinions for ourselves. One child wearing a scarf is not going to bring down Israel but hatred and killing from both sides Jew and Non-Jew, the increased publicity of anti-semitism (There was never a decline. Anti-semitism is alive and kicking and doing wonderfully. ) I personally wish that people would look at the situation from a neutral (Not Jewish or Muslim) and try and find the common ground from there. I have posted this anonymously as the backlash from stating a counter position to my community can be devastating. Just ask Josh

Anthony Reich said...

I note that a number of people that Josh is being bullied, or being castigated for expressing a contrary view. This is certainly not my intention. I am in favour of debate, and of disagreeing with each other on key issues. Josh's actions, however, were not a call for debate. His actions were a public statement that were not an invitation for thinking people to challenge his views. Remember that there is a time and a place for everything. Josh's choice of time, place and method of registering his contrary views are the reason for my response. If he chooses to go public in this way, he should ensure that he is honest about it, and that he is ready for people who may wish to oppose his standpoint.

"You have managed to get yourself into a very unfortunate set of circumstances" - no, he's been dragged into this - the original photo and caption made no reference to his personal views on any subject other than standing up against human rights abuses (which it can be argued Hamas is solely responsible). A lynch mob has formed to force a response and now this kid is going to be attacked on all fronts no matter what he says or does. That says more about the mob (and you included) than anything else.

A student who has been elected by the KDVP governing body as a prefect (never mind vice head boy) is surely considered to have a level of maturity.
He is a representative of the school and all it stands for. He must know that. He is not a wayward pupil with childish viewpoints - if he was, he would not head up the NATIONAL debating society.
This is a boy who takes a stand.
He cannot deny his political statement and he cannot deny that he has given further ammunition to our enemies.
Shame on you Josh. You have deliberately embarrassed the school and all that it stands for.
You have identified yourself with the BDS and its ilk. Don't putter around with lame excuses. You are either with us or you are against us - there is no half measure.
It's that simple.

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom of consequences, you are an attention seeking, uneducated, juvenile with absolutely 0% life experience, making it apparent that you dropped Jewish studies way before Matric - the wrath of the Jewish community is justified and will not only follow you but that of your family, not because you are talking the truth but because you are spreading damaging frivolous lies.

If you don't like what he has to say then engage him on the topic. Don't persecute him for having the courage and intelligence to express an opinion.

Saying that the forum which he has chosen to air his views justifies cowardly mob attacks on him does not say very much about the attackers.

Unfortunately the damage is done and when u have Muslim friends sending u pics of him and asking u who he is it's a problem. His pic is now on some anti Israel sites and will contribute to the antisemitism in Sa

Your actions carry consequences for Rabbi's living all the way in Miami, walking on Shabbos. How?.. People won't look at you, like I and 99% of the educated population do but as a symbol that even jews in jewish day schools are against Israel which fuels further hatred and action. I say this not to hurt you but because I believe it, that jewish blood could be on your hands. Right here in SA.

No-one would focus long enough to blink twice at Joshs pathetic humanitarian attention seeking message if he wasn't abusing his schools position. All I noticed was "Hey look at me!!!" in that letter. Arrogant little boy child with a little boy child opinions. Here is the real issue, that opinion of yours was done in a blazer that many Jews have worn before you and you have disgraced several generations of learner's. Disgraceful child.

I wonder if Adrian Gore shares these values and if Discovery Health was one of the businesses that was in reference to a banner outside the entrance sloganeering "Jews businesses against Israel", at Sundays rally? Your father may soon have to publicly distance himself from you or face his own consequences.

Honestly, I think that your comments, overall, reflect an over-reaction that is quite absurd. Young (and passionate) people typically do things that they may come to regret when older. The level of anger and abuse levelled at this kid is more like a lynch mob. The way to deal with the "issue" is by civilized discussion, and not this haranguing and brutish public shaming. He is all our kids, potentially, and we should protect him as such. Are you such an insecure bunch that you can't absorb some deviation from the party line? In effect, extemists are thus created, paradoxically. Not to mention the fact that, instead of ignoring the matter and dealing with it privately, it's now gone viral with all the attendant brouhaha.

Anonymous said...

Josh you have saddened the SA Jewish community just one week after thousands of us came together in JHB to support Israel. Your deputy head boy status should be taken away and you should be expelled from KDVP immediately.

I note the comments that have been posted, which are too numerous for me to respond to individually.

The purpose of my letter to Josh is not to oppose real and valid debate within the community and in Israel about how to respond to the Palestinian issue, and how to respond to Hamas. This should be encouraged. My objective is also not to open a lynching season on Josh and his colleagues. There is no room here for personal attacks, and I request that all respondents refrain from any personal attacks. This is particularly true when we read today that anti-Semitism is higher in Europe today than at any time since Hitler was in power in Germany. We need to unite as much as possible.

Instead, my intention was to highlight that there is a way, a time and a place for entering into debates. I am holding Josh responsible for the error in his judgement in the way that he chose to publicly express his views.

Hi Devorah.
a) What happened to KDVP?- Maybe they started allowing different opinions. Maybe they promote different opinions. If an educational institution controls their leaders, ie. selecting what their students hear, the first thing I think is propaganda.
b) The school should not do anything, Josh is free to speak his mind.
c) The message he is sending to his fellow students is that we are the youth, we have the power to change. We have the freedom of speech. We have the power to make a difference. [Maybe you would prefer your child to sit in a box and follow the stream, I would want my child to be free, and to formulate his/her own opinions. SHAME ON YOU FOR THIS]
d) Maybe next year he will get a car from his parent, maybe he will take a gap year, but what I think he will be doing is what he loves, and what HE feels right. This is a combination of a positive upbringing by his parents.

Finally I would like to say that you come across as a biggot to me. I really hope that you can look towards the other side. I really hope that you understand how damaging these comments can be. Especially from a "Know it all" parent like you. Devorah Please apologise

Yes and whatever one's actions in the world one must realize there is a ripple effect. These are natural consequences. If he was man enough to stand up and make a public statement, he needs to stand up tall and take the flack. Unfortunately, he vilified himself by his actions.

If he wants to voice his opinions, that's great and if he disagrees with Israel's policies thats fine too, BUT there should've been a "context" to their opposition. They should've written underneath the photo, "we support the people of Gaza and not Hamas. We realize that there are human rights violations but one's that are perpetrated by Hamas. We implore the Israeli army, who are in their right to defend not only themselves but their country as well crom indiscriminate rockets attacks At the same time, we implore the Israeli army to show restraint as well, since many innocent Palestinian men, women and children are getting caught in the crossfire".
Context is everything.

And further more, he represents a fervently and proudly Zionist school that has existed for (what over) 60 years and to come out and publicly announce on Facebook that your leanings side with a cause that is inherently diametrically opposed to the one your school represents, then that is wrong and disingenuous.

And I hope that no one calls for the head of this kid because we are ignorant villagers with pitch forks and flaming torches but what he did was stupid, naive and incredibly dangerous. Why dangerous, you ask. When Jews (yes Jews) are being attacked, not for siding with Israel but for being Jews. So I can understand why people take offense to this.

I am far more frightened by the attempt to suppress freedom of expression and debate within our community than Josh’s ill considered and insensitive comments and actions. Far too often I am hearing appeals to emotion that seek to squeeze the space for free thought and critical engagement. The fact that some of you live in Israel, have fought in the army, or have children fighting in the army, does not give you the right to suppress opinion and critical thought, nor does it provide you with an insight that therefore renders the Diaspora Jew’s rational meaningless. I respect your sacrifice, I am grateful for it, but we are a free thinking people, smart enough to know that there is space for believing in Israel while being prepared to criticize some of her actions, anyone suggesting an ‘us or them’ dichotomy sounds horribly feeble and frankly you endanger the pluralism that defines our people. Stop the witch-hunt, be thankful we have dissent within our ranks, I’m proud of it – it sets us apart from our would be enemies.

I was a officer to a platoon of brave young men ,that gave there hearts and souls to protect not only Israel but Jewish people from all over the world. Joshua for you to wear a Kafir is a kick in the head for all past and present soldiers fighting to protect our Jewish heritage . I would like you to stand a door and to tell the parents . Josh, how many of us living in Israel need to be killed before you recognise that we are the innocent party? How many missiles need to be launched into Israel before you recognise that every single missile is attempted murder?

You have been entrusted with a position of leadership. Where is your integrity?

Before taking a stand on matters that amount to life and death, at the very least come here and educate yourself regarding our reality on the ground. You should be a vociferous advocate, disseminating the truth and supporting those of us in constant danger as well as our soldiers - the best and bravest among us who defend Jews everywhere. In your statement you reference humanity – how quickly you have forgotten that in June, three innocent teenagers were kidnapped and brutally murdered by those whom you defend.

The reality is that we are not responsible for the destruction in Gaza. We didn't ask for this war and we didn't initiate it. We are engaged in a war against a murderous terror entity bent on our destruction. An enemy that consistently chooses death over life. This is about a radical ideology that pursues the destruction of my (and your) nation and my country and are very happy to sacrifice their own nation in the process.

Those who are so quick to point out that there are far less Israeli casualties than Arab casualties, say so while omitting that if not for the Iron Dome we would easily have 2000 casualties – until the cease-fire took effect this past Tuesday, 3356 rockets were launched into Israel. 579 of them were intercepted by the Iron Dome. The Iron Dome has done much to protect Israeli's and yet it is undeniable that those of us forced into bomb shelters have been traumatised and our citizens who live in the South of the country, closest to Gaza deal with extremely high rates of post traumatic stress disorder. Children are terrified and rightly so.

The tunnels were dug with the express purpose of kidnapping and murdering Jews and Israeli's. The sophisticated tunnel infrastructure has struck fear in the hearts of millions. Parents are petrified to take their children back home - we not only have to live with the constant sirens, running to bomb shelters and the missiles falling but are now forced to live with the knowledge that at any moment, terrorists can emerge from the ground beneath our homes and murder us.

To all those who say that Israel's response is too aggressive, I ask: What exactly would you do if you and your family were living in such danger on a continual basis? What expectations would you have of your government in the face of 14 years of ongoing missiles and terrorists emerging from the ground beneath your home with the stated goal of murdering and kidnapping you?

Josh, do you comprehend that your actions and statements openly support terrorism?

Among the 64 soldiers killed and the hundreds injured in defense of the Jewish nation over the past few weeks are some of my friends and relatives. There is a deep feeling of mourning here for those who sacrificed their lives and in doing so gave all of us life. That you could even think of donning Muslim garb in support of terrorists who rise up against Jews everywhere in the world is reprehensible. You claim to support the people on both sides and yet you chose to wear attire that represents brutal terror entities. Where are the articles of clothing that represent Israel?

The past two months, the whole nation came together and was unified in a way that we have not experienced in Israel since 1973. Your statement only serves to further divide and separate and proves that any connection between what you believe and reality is purely coincidental. Evidently you have no understanding of the facts as they pertain to Israel and her surroundings. What we are being forced to endure leaves absolutely no room for moral ambiguity. While Israel fights for survival, Jews around the world should be supporting Israel with a profound sense of moral clarity.

Josh, you should be very, very ashamed!

Joshua, having made Aliyah 5 years ago, I have come to realise just how precious, important and critical Israel is to all Jews

My daughter is KDVP alumni, and had we stayed in RSA, my son would have been one of your peers. I am so thankful that we made Aliyah and that my children cannot be associated or linked to you in any way. We will only have fond memories of the KDVP that was, before it became tainted by you.

I hope you will never have to be in the situation that you are forced to Israels door, parents Katuba in hand as so eloquently put by Anthony Reich, the bitter pill will be difficult for you to swallow.

Boys younger, the same age and one year older than you have over the past 67 years died so you can have a homeland, until as recently as last week. You are a slur on their sacrifice and blessed memory, a disgrace as a Jew and as you call yourself, a "Zionist". And even more sadly, because it will sadly happen, more boys will die keeping YOUR homeland safe and intact, so you will always have a "home".

Become a man, as they are men, pubically, apologise unequivocally, and resign you position at the school, return your honours so as to prevent others emulating your shameful ways.

There are thousands of us living in jhb who feel the shame that this ignorant ungrateful boy has brought upon us. You penned most brilliantly into words what is on all our minds. It's been suggested that a free trip to Gaza might clear up a very muddled up and not so intelligent mind.

No, Anthony, you've let the genie out of the lamp and there's no way of getting it back in. You have given people the permission to express every bigoted, narrow-minded, suffocating and hate-filled thought they (may) have been repressing. I stand behind Israel 100%, but I'm embarrassed to witness a lynch mob that uses intimidation to suppress debate, and hate language to achieve their ends. I cannot believe that we have come to this. It most certainly does not further our cause.

Those who castigate Josh for expressing a nuanced opinion, with shades of grey rather than a black and white rigidity, are doubtless among the most bigoted and cognitively simple people I've heard in a long time. There is much talk about Islamic fundamentalism, but this simplistic, blinkered Zionism is by far more distasteful, proffered as it is in the saccharine coating of the need to discipline and guide a young fool. Shame on all the self-righteous, prejudiced "voices of South African Jews" represented here, for their astonishing short-sightedness.

I am 100% pro Israel and also pro Josh Broomberg. Judiasm is a religion that encourages critical thinking. His parents and his school have done well to raise a young man who is idealistically looking for the best outcomes for all nations and all people. Let's not sink to reactionary gut-responses where we inhibit freedom of thought of our best and brightest. Josh has a wonderful future ahead of him. Let us as Jewish adults support, nurture and guide him rather than chastise him. Thank G-d there are still some reasonable people who have commented in this thread. Think back to when you were 18 and were naive and optimistic about the world. Surely this is the prerogative of youth.

How would you suggest he airs his views, Anthony? In private?
Perhaps your view that Palestinians don't care as much about their children as Israel does should be questioned here. I find your article hateful and shameful. When did it become wrong to question ourselves as Jews? I stand with young Josh.

The important thing we all need to remember here is that loshon hora is ultimately what led to the Jews loosing Israel in the first place. We have just been through Tisha b'Av, which is a day destined for tragedy. Loshon hora is the reason both temples were destroyed, and it is sadly something which, if we continue to partake in, we will continue to suffer for.

I am pro Israel and a zionist and as much as I may want to lash out at the ignorance sometimes shown by Jews when they denounce Israel, I know that by doing so, Jews will continue to face difficulty.

Please be very careful with what you say, loshon hora is a very powerful tool that the yetzer hora uses to ensure that we continue to stumble. Jews need to come together in love and Torah, not ridicule one another on internet forums.

Well done Josh - don't let bigots like Anthony Reich and others get to you. Stand up for truth, justice and freedom. You have joined the brave - those from B'tselem, Breaking the Silence, Anarchists against the Wall and the more than 500 Jews who have signed a statement opposing the onslaught on Gaza. If Anthony and his ilk take a step back and listen to what they are saying - they will realize that it is racist, bigoted and parochial. Let history judge you, not these small people.

Thanks Josh. You are a hero for all the innocent Palestinians being killed, maimed, disfigured, displaced, orphaned, etc. You be strong in your beliefs and value and hopefully others will come to realise what's really ie. Humanity. This is not about Jews or Muslims. It's about a peaceful outcome to a gruesome time in the history of Israelis and Palestinians.

wasim said...

How can you people just stand by as thousands of innocents are being brutally attacked? I am Muslim and I beleive in a 2 state solution but is this really the way you want it to happen? I want peace and so do the Palestinians. By is real continuing to do things the way they are, this will just result in more enemies for them. Stand together as a Jewish community and ask the leaders of your homeland to have a peaceful approach. I swear to you 1, 5 billion Muslims want peace. But if this brutal attack continues, it might be too late. Please please I beg of you people. Stand up for peace and humanity.

What Josh did was brave and humane. He is a upstanding young citizen and a true and proud member of real Judaism. When will everyone realise that it's about standing up for what is right in the face of humanity. You cannot stand by and watch as a nation is so racist and brutal towards innocent people. Jews unite to better Israel and make it an upstanding nation and bearers of the worldwide Jewish community. Currently the israely state is Taking itself into a dark stage that will forever be seen as such in history of mankind. It is not too late though for Israelis and the greater Jewish community to change this and make a turn for the better.

What about the thousands killed and thousands disfigured and disabled Palestinians? Stand up for humanity and not just your own especially when they are so clearly in the wrong. Wake up and see how brainwashed IDF members are and it'd scary to see the Jewish community in South Africa supporting them. It is not right to hurt or kill innocent people so stand up for what is right and speak up against what is wrong. Pleade pray for peace everybody.

Israel has a right to defend itself. We should not stand against Israel at this time but rather be saying free gaza from Hamas, which is exactly what Israel is trying to do.

Hamas use their civilians to protect their weapons. They fire rockets from schools and hospitals and when Israel retaliates, which is has every right to do, Hamas ensures that civilians die in order to sway public opinion against Israel. How can you not see that? Every Palestinian death is a victory for Hamas as they use that in their war of propoganda. Free Gaza from Hamas. Am Yisrael Chai.

Danyelle, no one is disputing what this kid tried (unsuccessfully) to do. Is it inhumane what is happening in Gaza. Yes of course! but again it's not so black and white as you might perceive. Of Israel being the big bad aggressor and the Palestinians, being the innocent peace loving victims of a crime that some would wrongly surmise as one against humanity.
As I mentioned before, context, Danyelle is everything!
It is how you present yourself and your viewpoint. Now I've read his response which with all due respect is mercurial at best. He believes in Israel's right to defend itself but at the same time, he doesn't. He must make up his mind. Israel was not the aggressor in this scenario nor do Israelis wish to send their sons and daughters who I'm am assuming (?) are no older than you to go fight an implacable enemy bent on not only killing himself and you but using his own people as canon fodder for PR purposes.

This is a war where unfortunately the people of Gaza are going to suffer but do not blame Israel. The blood of these people are not on Israeli hands. That dubious honor goes to Hamas.
When the allies destroyed Dresden in WW2, where they to blame or were Germany the authors of their and their own peoples fates. It's lamentable and heinous and barbaric but that is war.

I'm not saying we ALL have to agree. We are all entitled Danyelle to an "informed" opinion (operative word being informed).

And unfortunately, a 17 or 18 year old with nary life experience is entitled to give an opinion without properly explaining his or her stand in a competent and adult manner.

Israel never went into this half heartedly. They never brazenly went and looked for war (no one does) but when 3356 rockets on reigning on you head, what is one to do?

And pray tell, what is real Judaism??

Complete disgrace.. South Africans, I urge you to get your facts straight, or else you may be just as responsible for the rife Anti-Semitism and Anti-Zionism we are witnessing from our haters abroad, especially in SA!! Of course it is painful to see the deaths of so many Palestinians, BUT when a Jewish representative (-head boy!!) of King David Victory Park- an Orthodox Zionistic school, and SRC representative goes and dons a Keffiyeh and declares his support of the Palestinians.. without initially making an effort to rationally examine the causes for such mass killings.. this is in no way acceptable!!
I don't care if you are liberal and left-wing, radical right wing or "middle" moderates.. you have no right to present one-sided facts, and it serves neither us Jews and Israelis nor the innocent Palestinians under the oppression of Jihadist Chamas rule, any justice whatsoever.
Now, if you see anyone who is presenting such distorted opinions.. you better inform them of the truth before these groundless statements make an impact on others...
Don't just dismiss these happenings as minor outrages.. they do influence the unaware, and as a leader of King David, a teenager who may presumably be looking to draw attention, form peer pressure and so easily achieve his goal as adolescents tend to crave such recognition... - this is very dangerous.. especially to" liberal-Zionistic "youth groups, as they name themselves..( who shall go unnamed here).. as they falsely educate young youth and may arouse such a humiliation to the Israeli and Jewish nation... and King David for that matter.
[See: Can Habonim please explain this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xiecd3-cRo]
Bnei Akiva - you as a Zionistic youth group, headed by well- educated individuals have the power to influence the mindsets of the confused and misled teens of King David, Herzliya, Public schools or whatever they may be.. This type of thing should in no way be tolerated, and I believe that you really can change such negative representations of Israel, in the same way that you educate your own channies, even though they may be more willing to listen!
I'm perfectly happy to speak to anyone who wants to know facts from Israel and the Hebrew University, as well as from Israeli media and other sources..... but I'm pretty sure you guys know enough..Feel welcome to follow my blog on the Times of Israel too for more facts..
This writer also depicts the Israeli and Jewish conflict in such a compelling and frank manner, and I am sure it would be loved by teens, as he uses their 'strong' language in order to engage his readers.. Additionally, I am sure you guys are aware of the Palestianian group that has unfortunately filed a case against Dean Goodson, a CT volunteer in the IDF. He is in fact the brother of a girl I made Aliya with. This is an absolute outrage, although I am not surprised - just judging the ANC and ANCYL's prejudiced view of Israeli matters. There must be something we can do about this!! I know tons of volunteers who haven't made Aliya and are currently serving here.. what will happen if they do achieve their goal in prosecuting such innocent Zionistic boys, how are or soldiers meant to come home?!!!!!
[Please see:
http://www.jpost.com/International/South-Africa-threatens-to-prosecute-citizens-serving-in-Israeli-military-370559]
I would be happy if anyone could tell me exactly how we can stop such unjustified prosecution! How does the ANC have any right to strip a person of his own self determination, to which he is democratically accredited?! How is this being stood for when our political leaders can be tried for much worse 'crimes' ?!!... if I can even term serving in the IDF as a 'wrongful act'... How long are we gonna wait til these corrupt, ignorant and vengeful leaders destroy the Jewish and Israeli community?!
This should not be stood for! It's one thing when they go and embezzle the state's money and rob SA citizens of housing, food grants, proper healthcare and user friendly roads.. not to mention many many other things.... What about addressing the immense poverty and injustices already abound in SA before they start interfering with another state- as if they can run their own country...
BUT it is something completely different when they go and interfere with a state they know nothing about, and condone terrorism.
The ANC may have started as a Terrorist Organization, but it by no means should be practicing or supporting such terror, unless it is has some constructive intent. The Apartheid is over, whether they like it or not. Yes, we allow for affirmative action today in order to correct past wrongs, but this does not imply instituting laws to negatively harm white South Africans... This was not Mandela's ideal. His legacy should not be defiled, as the ANC are unfortunately doing today - with their foolish attempts to create justice in the world, and overlooking their inherent national injustices. What am I referring to ? Oh Zuma and the Nkandla case, and Malema and his embezzlement.. the fact that Malema still has power over the ANCYL after being dismissed... The fact that we have as our leaders - those that have not attained any academic knowledge to base their beliefs- those that shape South African ideologies and doctrines.. those that fuel the ANCYL and BDS and pro-Palestinian parties.
[See: http://www.timeslive.co.za/politics/2014/04/04/anc-case-against-da-zuma-stole-your-money-for-nkandla-sms-dismissed-with-costs]
[Just for aughs, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Malema]
So amusing...
On second thought.. no ways is it amusing - it is scarily uncanny, however satirical and comical it may seem. You can see what an impact this ignorance is creating. You can see at Wits University, in the ANCYL, in parliament, and even in King David (of all places) - what effects this is having!!!
I am overseas, and I can even see it!

Unknown said...

Follow up from the past 2 comments..I have always voiced such opinions but this is really taking it too far now - you do not have any right to start persecuting the Jews, as the National party persecuted the blacks. Mandela would not want this, even if he did go and support the PLO.. this does not go along with his "ideal.. for equality" [Rivonia Trial- "I am prepared to die"].
This does not portray the true reality here in Israel. We are by no means condoning the deaths of innocent lives. However, we are for eliminating terrorism, as we have every right to be doing. We are not going into the West Bank and killing civilians, we are firing into Gaza, as we have no choice, otherwise by now neither I, nor the rest of us would be here right now... No joke... if you see how many tunnels were dug in order to come and kill us civilians.. the terror attacks here in East Jerusalem - where I study..., the endless rockets, the Jihadist doctrines...
And then - Josh, whoever you may be, although no head boy of King David in my eyes, go and read about how Chamas is using human shields.. go and read how much care the IDF takes in warning the Gazan civilians to evacuate their homes. Why, might you ask do they not adhere to these warnings? Either, because they want to represent more 'innocent Palestinian casualties' to the world, or Hamas are threatening them if they so much as dare budge an inch!
... Or since Hamas has bombarded the whole of the miniscule Gazan strip with their tunnels, arsenal and terrorist schemes, whether in hospitals, UN schools, in houses, and of course , I shall not leave out the fact that their own children are happily used as human shields - as they represent the "Shahid", a holy messenger of Allah, and therefore, do not have any problem with his death, nor the death of any others..
[See:http://www.israelvideonetwork.com/dont-stop-sharing-this-until-every-mother-has-seen-it]
Of course, this does not represent every Gazan civilian; yet all those who support the radical Jihadist terrorism of Hamas. Unfortunately, some have no choice other than obeying their demands..
I feel for every innocent Gazan exposed to this war, to this baseless killing and massacre, that has unequivocally been brought about by Hamas - with no precipitating Israeli attack...
Israel entered Gaza in defense, not as a pre-emtive attack!!!

[See:
http://www.timesofisrael.com/idf-indiscriminately-killing-in-gaza-data-says-no/] - This article shows that despite the high toll of political casualties - the statistics show that they are mainly terrorists (half) and otherwise men between 20-27 or so.. and the minority is Gazan infants and women...
Food for thought, huh?
What do you say about that former head boy of KDVP?!...
So student representatives and King David learners who follow this young KD student, should wake up and read the news - not just CNN or Al Jezeera.. If they are to represent the student councils, they should be worldly, and should be making use of multiple sources in making public statements. However, the reality of the matter is that sadly these statements made by those that have not attained academic degrees are unreliable - they are not based on facts, rather strong and somewhat distorted and unfounded beliefs and opinions - yet, I assure you, they are far more powerful than academically based arguments.. far more compelling and blood-stirring!!!

Follow up to past 3 comments: This too applies to each and every one of you upon making public statements, as well as to the SA officials.. However, I have no power over any of you ,nor over them... I just am so sick and tired of seeing all this. Enough already!!
You could say there is war in Israel, but at least we have the wonderful IDF to defend us.. Yet, overseas, you guys are the defenders of the Jewish communities of the diaspora. That is why I urge you to go about informing whoever you can... before this gets even more out of hand!!
Your rallies are beautiful.. they make us all proud to be South African.. to see your Zionism, belief and firm support of Israel! I just don't know how we are gonna change the minds of our governors..
There must be a way though.. That is why you, Bnei Akiva and Yeshiva College and King David should now go and open discussion groups with creative young minds in school and out.. in social gatherings so that they can contribute and take part in Israeli awareness initiatives..
I have immense faith in you.. supporting you all the way from Jerusalem as a former Yeshiva College student and Bnei Akiva maddie..

Thank you so much, Anthony, for stating the case so eloquently. What a pity that there always have to be responses from self-hating Jews who feel that they look good in the eyes of the world when they can prove how even-handed they are by standing up for the other side. In this case, all they prove is their shallow perspective on all events - past and current. I am sure though, that with time, Josh will mature and join his people in being compassionate without abrogating his sense of justice and truth.

Well done to Israel for making Hamas more popular than ever even though they are terrorists. Did u see Gaza son? It's a residential prison which Israel created, obviously resistance will be from within. Every death is a victory for Hamas and will eventually result in The current ideology of Israel being replaced by a more peaceful nation
I cant wait for a peaceful solution where Muslims Christians and Jews can live peacefully together. Please try and stop innocent people from being dismembered, maimed orphaned disfigured and killed. Death sometimes is the better option. Dying for a cause is better than living supporting injustice.

Oh the horrendous things that will said about this government. Nothing can justify killing innocent babies and to blame Hamas for the death of them is so ridiculous. Yes Hamas is wrong but Israel is now far worse and the people here bizarrely saying Hamas is responsible for the killing of the innocent people doesn't make sense. Please put pressure on the Israeli government to stop the killing before its too late for Israel. Palestinians can only get stronger from the current massacre. Israel unfortunately is dooming itself into who knows what type of future. It's not too late. This is not doomsday. Peace is attainable. Save Israel, help Gaza &free palestine!! It's everyones responsibility especially the people in this chat because we all want peace.

Finally, an articulate voice of reason! Your reply to an arrogant and misguided schoolboy is so aptly put. What a shame it is that this boy has wasted the opportunity to spread truth and to show his affinity toward the culture/religion/lifestyle which he was raised. And then to add insult to injury he has condoned the very statement which left him at the center of an attack by the community which he has shamed. Some people are asking for him to be stripped of his rank as Deputy Head Boy of KDVP, but this is not consequence enough for the discord and anger he has sown with his simple-minded views. In a time when all our attention and support should be aimed towards supporting the soldiers and leadership who go out there to protect not only our people, but also our being, our existence; Josh Broomberg decided to grab his 5 minutes of fame, or perhaps more aptly put - his infamy.

Naeema. No one wants to kill children. Israel for all it's faults and there might be many, do not relish going into Gaza and dealing with Hamas. Naeema, you sound like kind and caring woman and by no means am I trying to placate you with platitudes but if this war is to end, Hamas MUST stop these attacks because at the end of the day, the only people who will suffer, will be the innocent Palestinian men, women and children. Too long have they been a pawn and bargaining chip by the PLO who were too corrupt to even run a country and hence lost to Hamas. And to Hamas themselves, who are so bloodthirsty and singular minded that they cannot see past their own hatred of Jews to even come to the negotiating table.

I do wish there wasn't a war and most of the Jews on this thread do as well. Please believe me but sometimes war comes calling and we can either do nothing and let rockets reign indiscriminately down on our cities and towns, IRRESPECTIVE of whether they do damage or not, or we fight back. This is the situation that Hamas has put us and their own people in.

I am sorry. It's a crazy world

Some food for thought:
We overlook a very basic fact: Israel used its army to pull every Israeli (Jew, both civilian and military) out of the Gaza strip, leaving the infrastructure (particularly agriculture) to the Arab residents of the Gaza Strip so that the Arabs would have some means of making a living and earning foreign currency. The borders were left open with minimal checks as between any two countries at peace.
However these 'peace loving' recipients of the Gaza strip managed within two years to:
1. Destroy the infrastructure that had fed and clothed the Israelis living in the Gaza strip.
2. Started causing disturbances in the industrial area on the Gaza border, set up to encourage light industry for the Gazans and Israelis.
3. Sent out suicide bombers to kill innocent Israeli children and adults going about their peaceful business in the cities and villages of Israel.
4. Caused difficulties with the transfer of food, medicines and other goods into Gaza from Israel.
5. Started acquiring rockets which they started firing into Israel.
This instead of using the wonderful opportunity they were given to develop a thriving economy and live in peace with their neighbour Israel. The Hamas charter and beligerence got the better of them! They even drove the PLO out of Gaza because they were not adamant enough to fight for a Palestine from the River to the sea - in other words the whole of Israel, West Bank and Gaza without a single Jew.
I hope this helps many of the posters (and readers) with a better appreciation of why Israel has to keep defending itself at the unfortunate cost to those Gazans who want to live peacefully but are afraid to stand up to the violent bullying of Hamas.

Don't you see? The Palestinians are fed up with the brutality of the occupation. They are now willing to die for the cause. For peace, freedom and a normal life that you and I manage to live. PLO and Fatah failed to end the occupation. Hamas are now their only option for freedom and they are armed resistance. Peaceful methods have failed them. Armed resistance and death is the only realistic way now for the world to see Israels true intentions. And Hamas methods are working. The rockets Hamas fire may not be deadly but are serving their purpose. IDF can be pinpoint accurate if they wanted but the way they conducting their attack speaks volumes. A state representing a religion as amazing as Judaism is unfortunately doing more harm for Jewry than anything. The world is now waking up and seeing what is really going on. Chose the side of peace and justice! Stop the killing of innocents for Israels own good.

The issue is, they never sought peace through negotiation without having a gun conveniently at the table. They have spewed hatred and anti-semitic propaganda for years

They have been and forever will be fueled by genocidal hatred and ignorance and the of the mind that this country was theirs and forever will be.
Do I feel sympathy for the children that are dying, of course (no question). Do I feel sympathy for deranged Hamas fighters who use children body as armour NO! Do I feel sorry for those mothers who rejoice that their sons have made Jihad and will be rewarded for blowing up a bus in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, No!
Do I feel sorry that even when Israel sends down pamphlets to warn citizens that an air-strike is coming and they conveniently stay like sheep for the slaughter because Hamas told them otherwise, NO!

And pinpoint doesn't exactly mean that there won't be collateral damage. It's not like the missile is going to hit 1 person and miraculously not injure anyone else (don't be naive).
What speaks volumes is that Israel still phones and tells these people they got to leave because I guarantee you this HAMAS WOULDN'T!

Josh did not get himself into “an unfortunate set of circumstances.” His critics have dragged him through the streets and pilloried him for refusing to conform to their narrow outlook.

I went to KDVP. My mother, brother, niece and other family live in Israel, and it’s where I met my husband. I am a Zionist and I believe in Israel's right to defend itself. I strongly believe that it is critical not to turn a blind eye to the suffering of others and it is equally critical to speak out. I applaud Josh Broomberg for his compassion, for having the courage to express his views, and for refusing to cave to the arrogant conceit of his community who sees every situation in black-and-white terms. Unlike them, Josh can simultaneously “love and support the state of Israel” and “reject and criticize some of its actions,” as he put it.

Anthony, you invoke the Holocaust to chastise Josh. Those harsh facts are the reason why Israel must defend itself and its people. But it is not a reason for turning a blind eye to suffering. Natanyahu himself, hardly a bleeding heart, has expressed regret over the suffering in Gaza. There is another way to look at that history. Had more Europeans spoken up, had the compassionate people among them had the courage to speak out, maybe things would have been different (and there were many compassionate – but silent – people). Josh never said that he didn’t value Israel. He dared to imagine a different future.

Israel is a vigorous democracy, not the fascist state its detractors and enemies try to portray. But democracy requires tolerating the free expression of ideas, including those you don't agree with. Dissent is not disloyalty. Dissent can be a deep expression of patriotism. I think it's an idea that a lot of people in the Jewish community need to be reminded of.

The efforts to deprecate Josh would be bad enough if he was a full adult. But he is a teenage boy who had the courage to express his views. The big pile-on is unfair and it's wrong, and you people should be ashamed.

Why is Israel taking away more and more land so regularly? When will they have enough land? They are pushing them into a small strip of land with no way to get out. They want Hamas and civilians to live side by side so they can use this as an excuse to blame the palestinians for siding with Hamas. It's like all Israeli defenders have the same set of responses to a thousand different questions. It has become obvious that this is all you got, the only thing you can hang on to. Especially this one " use children as human shields". This is ridiculously laughable. A strategy of blaming the oppressed for the killing of the oppressors. Brilliant! It has worked so far but not for much longer. The warnings are given to thousands everyday and only a small percentage are actually bombed. And where can they go? To a UN establishment? The beach? To wait at the borders? Mosques, schools, churches, hospitals, family members.oh no, no place in Gaza is safe from the IDF. I rather stay at home and risk dying like a sheep. That is the bravest thing to do in the face of this type of evil! Collateral damage is one thing but wiping out whole families, razing entire neighborhoods, bombing schools, shooting at unarmed people. When will you people realise the evilness of Netanyahu and his government. Please learn objectively what is going on in Israel and Palestine and then we can work for peace.

I think the hostile nature in which this boy is being attacked is quite unfortunate, however I still hold that he brought it upon himself.

Josh I would like to remind you that it is in the hamas charter to destroy Israel. This is not directed at the government of Israel but at her civilians, I would like to remind you of an incident from 2 years ago where a hamas terrorist broke into an Israeli home and murdered 2 adults, 2 young children and a baby in a cot.

There is no innocence in democratically voting a terrorist organisation into government. I would like to conclude in wishing you much luck for the future and blessing you that your eyes will be opened to the truth, that Israel bomb Gaza to protect herself while hamas uses children as human shields. They murder their own children to try destroy us.

P.s this war will end when they love their children more than they hate us (Golda Meir)

Laughable is the fact that Hamas has admitted to to using human shields. Laughable is the fact that UNRWA has found stockpile after stockpile in UN schools. Laughable is the fact that when there was no wall and no blockade, there were suicided attacks in tel aviv and Jerusalem. If they were herded into Gaza, blame the PLO and Hamas. Blame them for destroying an infrastructure in Gaza and for 8 years of building tunnels and buying Iranian and Syrian made missiles and small arms.
Laughable is the fact that reporters have seen with their own eyes Hamas morons using and utilizing mosques and schools and hospitals to wage a guerrilla war, you simple minded fool.
Laughable is that you think Hamas is entirely blames les and yet spew their propaganda on local Palestinian TV's. Laughable is the fact that they admit to telling their own people to no vacate an area that is too be bombarded. Where are you living that you can he so blinded.
Laughable is the fact that 154 rockets have been fired at Israel since January with an additional 3356 rockets in 2 months.

Peace comes when morons like you can realize that Hamas is no savior but a vile group that will eventually destroy it's own people for no matter the cost and for the sake of a cheap headline in a western newspaper and a little more cash from their paymasters in Quatar.

I agree. None of what is happening is laughable. I agree, when Hamas used suicide bombers it is unacceptable. Firing rockets with the possible danger of killing an innocent Israeli is criminal. I agree that using a child or any innocent or even a prisoner as a human shield is a war crime. What is not laughable is the fact that you can see how Israel is Imprisoning and trying to contain the entire Gaza population into a minute strip of land with no escape, and to expect no resistance. Everyone knows Hamas has done terrible things and can be categorised as a terrorist organisation. Is Israel any better? What about the war crimes they have committed and are committing. Droppings bombs on innocent people and totally destroying them and their neighborhoods with the hope of killing a member of Hamas. Continue bombing schools, places of worship, hospitals, UN sanctuaries etc in a small and heavily populated city like Gaza and with out a doubt you can expect Gorilla warfare or other new and unfortunately gruseome ways of protecting their people. Israel you have every right to defend yourself. But by killing babies, children, woman and the elderly? Defend don't destroy and annihilate! The world will not stand by much longer and allow this! Israel is their own worst enemy, not Hamas . The current government of Israel's own actions will result in their ultimate doom. Hamas won't defeat you but they are exposing you. Israel may win the battle but the war will be won by the just which are the Palestinian people and the Israelis who oppose the current massacre. Hamas is not blameless but their propaganda is catching up to Israels propaganda ito effectiveness. Don't listen to each sides propaganda, we all have a duty to be objective! Fight for peace and justice. Stand up for what is right and oppose tyranny. Josh, you are brave and honourable for standing up for injustice . It could not have been easy doing what you did coming from your tight knit community and the world applauds you. You have helped many within your community to realise the truth and stand against Injustice. Thanks Josh, you are my hero! Continue the righteous fight!

Are you serious? Israel is not containing Gaza in one small strip! Gaza was a part of Israel which was given to the Arabs which later posed threat to Israel. You talk of resistance, what the hell were they resisting during the first and second intifada when there was no wall. Check your facts! Open your eyes see what is really happening. Let me throw out some figures to give you an idea of the situation, there are 1.5 million palesinians living in Israel at this moment, guess how many jews live in gaza, yes you guessed it 0. There are palesinians in government and I personally have palesinian friends. If you think Israel is oppressing Gaza you are truly naive and it is unfortunate that you can so easily be manipulated into sympathising with murderers who want you dead

Israel has got itself into a dangerous position. The war zone is small, there is no where to run and no where to hide. The Palestinians, humanitarians and Hamas are indistinguishable from the air. A full scale ground invasion will result in too many casualties for IDF soldiers. As long as Israel continues the bombardment, innocent people will die. Do Israel kill millions of people in Gaza? That is the only way to get rid of Hamas. Maybe let the Palestinians flee by arranging the opening of the Egyptian border and then only Hamas might remain. But the Palestinians who leave will eventually come back to fight for their land. Hamas's goal now is to end the occupation and they will only stop sending missiles or any other form of retaliation once their objectives are achieved. An option is to continue the onslaught destroying Palestine in a systematic way. But this will only result in more condemnation and the inevitable self destruction of Israel.Eventually even America will distance themselves. Pressure is building. Israel will then be vulnerable.Israel will lose its Jewish identity and risks the Jewish people losing its Homeland. Jewish people will unfortunately continue to be persecuted whether they supported the genocide or not. Another option is to End the occupation. The settlements have to cease. Agree on terms to give the Palestinian people full freedom and autonomy. There are some who say that Israel tried this already, but that was not true freedom. To think of Palestinians as humans with equal rights is important and then provide them their freedom. A 2 state solution is probably the only way. Israel will still have its full military arsenal to deter any enemies. They will still have their nuclear arsenal for further protection. Netanyahu must be tried for war crimes. The
leaders from Israel who make this happen can become iconic heroes for future generations all over the world.

They were resisting the occupation which has been going on since the middle of the last century. The wall is not needed to occupy, it is used to control the oppressed and to protect Israels population. Since the wall is up Israeli citizens have become safer but the brutality of the occupier has increased. Probably because Palestinians didn't know what would be the outcome now that the wall is up so they increased their attacks on Israel.
Jews have easier access through the borders, why would they want to risk staying in Gaza where they can never have anything close to a normal life? Sooner or later those 1,5 million palestinians in Israel and another couple of million who now feel what Israel is doing too much. Wait till they rise up. Or rather for Israels own good, end the occupation ASAP.

Josh, seems like you pissed off more than a few people. In some instances there is a lot anger and disappointment and I want to apologise for most of the people for venting this anger against you as you are nothing but a boy and although you may think that you are wise and worldy, you are not and no boy should be subjected to this sought of outrage regardless. The irony is if you were in Gaza and you did the same thing, you would have been thrown off the top of a building by the very same people you are trying to defend.

You see Josh, you are nothing but a victim. Firstly, if you wouldn't have been so smug and put that stupid picture on Facebook there wouldn't have been this backlash. And secondly, you beleive what you see on TV without questioning the authenticity and the context of what is being shown - you have fallen victim to the images that Hamas orchestrates and wants the rest of the world to see. Seeing injured children strikes one at the very essence of their humanity and yes, who cannot be affected? But why are there injured children when Israel categorically, unlike Hamas, avoid injuring civilians? Because, Hamas put them there intentionally. This is the part that you don't see. It is all part of Hamas's strategy to discredit Israel and gain sympathy. Josh, if seeing innocent Palestinian children injured because Hamas uses them as human shields offends you, why don't you protest or voice your opinion against the real perpetrators, Hamas?

Josh we still love you. You are one of us and we will never desert you. You have just allowed youself to fall victim to a disingenuous propaganda campaign that is aimed at making the wrong party look bad. Before you go on and make more statements again in your life, find out the facts first.

Lastly, I hope you read every comment, especially your new anti-Semetic friends's, most of whom seem to be Muslim. It is amazing to see how much hatred there is towards people in this world, in particular Jews. Why is that, when all we want is to be left in peace? Thank G-d there is an Israel; and 'never again', we will never allow any other nation the oppurtunity to denigrate or abuse us...

If we look beyond the emotions surrounding Josh's actions, we can see the simple facts and their parallels with the past;

What Josh did is no different to wrapping a swastika around his neck.

Josh donned the flag of a group of people that wishes to exterminate the Jewish people worldwide, in addition to annihilating Israel. He did this knowingly, in the face of all the evidence (and charters) of the arab desire to do so, as well as their use of their civilians as human shields and progaganda tools.

Freedom of speech and opinion does not mean freedom to distort facts and lie. His actions and his written response are riddled with lies and perpetuate the call to slaughter Jews. Nothing he wrote is based on any facts at all. He has simply jumped on the bandwagon of world-wide slander and libel.

Remember Josh, when the arabs you support are done with Israel, they are coming for you.

I hope Josh is shunned and cast out as he rightly deserves. One cannot hurt Israel and Jews and perpetuate massive deception, and then ask for our help and acceptance in the name of debate and free speech and opinion.

There is no debate. Arabs want Jews to die, Jews refuse to do so. Nuff said.

Incredible response to a foolish act, and an even more absurd statement. He had dug himself an even deeper hole, by trying to defend an indefensible act, rather than admitting that his actions were in severely bad taste and damaging to him, his community, and all Jews in SA and beyond. Well done Anthony for your independent voice, which is echoed by most Jews in every corner of the globe, as well as people who value freedom and believe in right from wrong.

Wow this action by this young man has caused many ripples. My view on it all along was - this is a young man, just on his way from childhood what can you expect? Very brilliant, very well-meaning but lacking discernment and wisdom. Intellect has been so idolised by our culture that a young man with a great intellect is expected to be wise and act with understanding. Wisdom is something totally different and cleverness or talent does not ensure it. Josh would have done better in his statement to just apologise and not justify or rationalise his actions which only revealed his immaturity. So I repeat my point. He is young and unwise. I bless him and pray his heart and soul get a chance to unfold and support his very capable mind in future.

A really talented debater would first get the facts correct and would not have confused the issues and then have to apologize or mitigate. One has to have the the courage of ones convictions and take reponsibility. In Hebrew we say - I Efashar lirkod al shtei chatunot! (one cant dance at two weddings simultaneously) My grandfather would have quoted from the Talmud that when a fool throws a stone innto a deep well not even 200 wise men can get it out! Excellent response Anthony Reich. Perhaps the naive, young Joshua Broomberg will think twice in future before parading with a "Palestinian" scarf. Perhaps he (and we're singling him out because of his blatant statement, but others like him should pay attention too) should take cognisance of the blatant anti-semitism rising in South Africa. In particular, take note of parliamentarians who post pro-Hitler, anti-Jewish statements on Facebook, and trade union leaders (Tony Ehrenreich of Cosatu by name) who calls for "an eye for an eye" retaliation against Israel and Jews everywhere.
The issue is not a humanitarian one, neither is it a territorial issue; it is indeed, as rightfully pointed out, by nature an existential one - the existence of the nation of Israel.
It's time to wake up and smell the coffee.
